Why Proper Support Matters: Designing a Laundry Top That Lasts

When homeowners plan a laundry room remodel, whether for a Hilton Head Island renovation or a new construction home in the Lowcountry, most of the attention goes to finishes: cabinet color, backsplash, or the type of stone used for the countertop. What often gets overlooked is the structural integrity of the laundry top itself.

At StoneWorks, we consistently see preventable issues arise from improper installation, particularly sagging countertops, inaccessible plumbing, and long-term damage to both stone laundry tops and appliances. These issues are especially common in both HHI remodels and new builds where support structures are underestimated.

The reality is simple: a laundry top is not just a decorative surface; it’s a load-bearing structure. And without proper support, failure is inevitable.

The Foundation: Full-Height Panel Support

A properly supported stone laundry top installation must include vertical panels that extend all the way to the floor, on the left side, right side, and between the washer and dryer.

As Shannon Baltzegar, CEO of StoneWorks explains:

“In the visual, you can see there is cabinetry that has panels on the left side, the middle, and the right side, panels that reach the floor.”

This configuration distributes the weight of heavy materials like granite countertops and quartz countertops evenly and prevents stress points that lead to sagging. Think of it like a closet rod overloaded with clothes:

“We bear weight on all countertops… if you overload those with weight, it will pull it down. Similar situation. Countertops can sag when we bear weight on them, which could potentially damage your appliances.”

Despite this, some homeowners and even builders in Hilton Head Island new construction projects push back, especially regarding the middle panel. However, this is not an optional feature; it is best practice. The center support is essential for long-term durability.

Why Wall Cleats Aren’t Enough

A common shortcut in the countertop installation industry is using cleats attached to the wall to support the countertop. While this may seem sufficient in some laundry room renovations, it does not provide the structural integrity required for heavy stone.

“Cleats on the wall to hold up a top, that is not proper support.”

Stone materials like granite and quartz are dense and heavy. Without full vertical support, even the strongest materials used in custom laundry tops will eventually flex under pressure.

For additional insight into proper structural support for heavy surfaces, we recommend reviewing this related resource, originally published in the Bluffton Sun: Heavy Countertops Deserve High-Quality Cabinetry.

Don’t Block What You Need to Access

Another critical, and often overlooked, component of laundry room design in HHI homes is access to water shut-off valves.

“You don't want a custom cabinet or countertop piece blocking a valve… not having access to them can become very impractical.”

The solution is straightforward:

“We always recommend that we cut into the stone to have access to the water valves… If you block it off with a permanent fixture, it's going to be a problem.”

These cut-outs can be designed cleanly and intentionally, so they don’t compromise aesthetics while still maintaining functionality, something especially important in custom home builds and renovations in Hilton Head Island and Bluffton.

Choosing the Right Material

Not all stone performs equally in a laundry environment. Between detergents, bleach, and moisture, durability matters, especially in coastal South Carolina homes.

“Granite or quartz would be ideal.”

Softer materials, however, present risks:

“Marbles and softer stones would be susceptible to bleach… marble experiences damage with acidity.”

For homeowners investing in laundry room upgrades, selecting durable materials like quartz or granite countertops ensures long-term performance with minimal maintenance.

Build It Right the First Time

A well-designed stone laundry top for renovations or new builds should deliver three things:

  • Structural stability (no sagging or cracking)

  • Functional access (especially to water valves)

  • Long-term durability (materials that withstand daily use)

At StoneWorks, we understand how to balance all three for Hilton Head Island homeowners, builders, and remodelers.

You have to be able to get to your water valves. You need proper support. And you deserve a laundry top that performs as good as it looks.

StoneWorks knows how to do this correctly, efficiently, and built to last.
