John Baltzegar III began offering natural stone products in the Hilton Head area in 1987. John owned and operated Georgia Fireplace and Marble in Augusta, Georgia. The fireplace side of the business slowed down as the marble and stone side expanded. Recognizing the potential market for his products in the lowcountry, John began making sales calls the old fashioned way. He would drive to Hilton Head several times a week in order to meet face to face with builders, architects, and designers. He landed a large project on the island, and soon after found his services to be in full demand. He began building a reputation for high quality work and good business practice. This was a difficult time for him and the business. He would oftentimes spend the day driving for five hours to and from the island, making sales calls, and finally returning to the Augusta shop in order to help fabricate the products himself.
Hard work and perseverance paid off. In 1997, John was able to move his team and shop to the island in order to better serve their customers. They re-incorporated under the name StoneWorks Inc. and set up shop on Hunter Road. The decision to relocate quickly proved to be a wise one. The timing coincided with a construction boom in the area, and business really took off. John and his son, John IV (Little John), organized crews, trained employees, and focused on providing excellent service to their customers. Together, they built a foundation for a company that would thrive in the years to come.
And thrive it did...
Today StoneWorks employs 36 professionals with combined experience equaling 197 years working at StoneWorks. The company currently occupies 21,000 square ft. of offices, showroom, fabrication plant, and warehouse space. The product offering is huge including natural and engineered stone slabs, sinks, remnants, stone care products, ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass tiles as well as various stone related services.
The company holds an impressively large stock of materials on hand. StoneWorks also makes use of long held relationships with over 44 vendors in order to find the right materials for its customers.
The company has been awarded the title of "Accredited Stone Fabricator" by the Marble Institute of America. This is a distinction that only 35 fabricators in the US can claim. StoneWorks also won the Island Packet's reader's choice award for "Best Stone Surfaces Store" in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
More so than awards, the company has a long list of loyal, happy customers that can attest to its quality of work and services. The company is very thankful for its wide customer base. John and the team at StoneWorks will continue to redefine, reengineer, and rethink their products and services in order to continue making customers happy.
“The StoneWorks staff is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. Since all the prices we received were competitive, we chose StoneWorks because of Sadie Hanson and her gracious attitude, knowledge of product, and willingness to revise proposals for us. Everyone else that we worked with at StoneWorks also had the same qualities. We are extremely pleased with the final product and will certainly recommend StoneWorks to anyone requiring your services.”
